Contemporary Prescription Compounding
Basic Compounding
The advent of new technologies and demand for customized care requires the compounding pharmacist to do more than hand-roll suppositories and hand-pack capsules. This course will review contemporary prescription compounding techniques and provide hands-on training utilizing the newest equipment and technologies. An independent study component of the course will examine the legal, quality control, and safety issues related to compounding of prescription medications.
Program goal:
The goal of this program is to assist independent pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians in developing a prescription compounding practice. The objective of the instruction is to prepare participants to compound solutions, suspensions, topical creams, suppositories, lip balms, troches, gels, powders and capsules, and to maintain appropriate compounding logs and records.
Upon completion of this Certificate Program, the course participants will be able to:
- Compound various dosage forms including capsules and suppositories.
- Select, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Develop formulas based upon published data.
- Maintain appropriate logs and records that relate to compounding of prescription medications.
- Utilize problem-solving skills to assist patients and other health care professionals in addressing unique patient medication requirements.

- Unguator
- Capsule machine
- Suppository molds
- Heater/Stirrer/Electronic Scale
- Troche Molds
- Lip balm molds
- Tablet molds
